Bleaching works to whiten the outside of the tooth and in some cases the inside of the tooth as well. In-office teeth whitening with bleaching trays is often desirable when teeth become discolored. Discoloration can come from many sources such as smoking, tobacco use, dark food and drinks, age, and poor oral care.
Each patient will have a consultation before undergoing a whitening procedure. Treatment considerations can revolve around a patient's lifestyle, social status, and oral health. Individual bleaching trays are used to decrease the amount of contact with any other surface. These make in-office or professional at-home whitening treatments a better option than over-the-counter products. Also note that OTC whitening products take a significantly longer time to work than professional bleaching treatments. In-office treatments have immediate results.
Common adverse reactions are inflammation and sensitivity.
**Patients should note that dental restorations such as fillings, crowns, implants, etc., will not change color, only natural teeth can be whitened.
